I used to hate the Olympics

I have been watching every spare second of Olympics coverage I can squeeze in. I'm inspired. Last night, I even went jogging. And for lunch yesterday, I ate salad.

I wonder if Olympics season is similar to New Year's for fitness clubs. I wonder if they get extra business from all the people who have decided once and for all they are going to freaking get in shape and stop sitting on their fat butts. It makes sense to me.

Does anyone else just NOT understand gymnastics? I have no clue how they score all those back handsprings and flips and skills. All I know is that if you fall down, balance check, or fail to "stick" a landing, that's bad. Other than that, no clue. This is why I like the swimming competition. Whoever swims the fastest wins. Michael Phelps is part dolphin. I can't believe I ever hated the Olympics. The end.

completely OBSESSED with the Olympics. I've always loved them, never stopped, but I've watched more this year than any other year. For the next few weeks, I am off limits to anyone. I'm busy watching.

ha. I LOVE gymnastics. Grew up watching it all the time. Ask my dad. Seriously obsessed.
As for the scoring, it's different than it used to be, so I don't know too well the details ... but they start off with a difficulty score based on the types of elements they include in each routine, although apparently only the vault gets a predetermined value, and then they are scored on top of that for how well they execute the routine.

Elements and combinations of elements are valued in increments of .10, up to .70, and boo-boos are docked in tenths. They're expected to perform a minimum number of certain elements but don't get credit for repeating them.

Those two scores are added together for a total score. The hard part is that elements on the four rotations are all valued differently, so a perfect score on vault might be worth less than a perfect score on bars.

Have to say I haven't had much time for viewing thus far. BUT, I did watch the whole opening ceremony, and it absolutely gave me chills! Isn't it fantastic what can be accomplished when thousands of people work together? It's amazing!

Plus, I like the whole 'idea' of the Olympics. Even if there's major issues with human rights stuff (um, Bush, calling the kettle black are we?), the Olympics is still this amazing thing where everyone can at least honor the ideal of global peace and unity -- even if only in theory.

Plus, cause NZ is so freakin small, I've met several people who have a friend / family member in the Olympics. How cool is that?!
